What to Pack for Umrah: A List That Assumes You Have Packed Too Much

Packing advice for Umrah usually reads like an inventory. This one is shorter, because after enough groups you learn that the same six things get used and the same twelve come home untouched.

Bring these

• Unscented soap and toothpaste. The single most common ihram mistake is a scented product used out of habit.
• Two pairs of easy sandals. One will go missing outside the Haram. This is not a possibility, it is a schedule.
• A drawstring shoe bag. Carry your sandals in with you; the racks fill and shoes wander.
• An unlocked phone. A local SIM at Jeddah costs less than a day of roaming.
• Any prescription medicine in its original box, with the prescription. Loose strips in a pouch invite questions at customs.
• A refillable bottle. Zamzam coolers are everywhere; disposable cups are not.

Leave these

• More than four days of clothing. Laundry is cheap, fast, and included in most of our packages.
• A travel iron, a kettle, a hairdryer. Every hotel we use has all three.
• Large gifts bought in India. Buy them in Makkah, where they cost less and weigh the same.

The two nobody remembers

A small torch. Hotel corridors dim overnight and pre-fajr stairwells are darker than you expect.

Rehydration salts. Ten sachets weigh nothing. In July they are the difference between a lost afternoon and a lost day.

On the luggage itself

Most airlines on the Jeddah sector allow 30 kg checked and 7 kg cabin, but this varies by carrier and by fare — confirm against your own ticket rather than against what a relative was allowed last year. Zamzam is issued separately at the airport and does not count against your allowance.
